Defying Odds: Catching up with the Carters
Mark and Pam Carter are devoted parents who handle the challenges of parenthood despite having physical disabilities. Mark spent upwards of 10 years recovering from a traumatic brain injury after almost dying in a head-on-collision that claimed the lives of his mother and younger brother in 1970. After years of rehabilitation and struggling to deal with his new physical handicaps, Mark met Pam, a woman who was born with cerebral palsy, in an online chat room. Soon the couple fell in love, got married, and despite concern and doubt from those around them, began planning for a child. The Carters have been parents now for three years and have become comfortable with raising their child by themselves. When the Auburn couple hears concerns about their parental competency, they have one response about their 3-year-old son, Angelo: “Just look at him.”
